Ianis Hagi 'destroyed' claim as Rangers star's rough treatment leaves Romania chief fuming

The Romanian FA's technical director has accused people of "trying to destroy Ianis Hagi".

The Rangers star is the son of the country's greatest ever player, Gheorghe, and there is huge interest in his development.

However, Hagi jnr was criticised for his performances for the national team in the most recent international break and Romanian media have also noted he hasn't started any of the last three games under Steven Gerrard.

But the technical director of the FRF has hit back, insisting he's fed up of the country's talents being built up only to be knocked down.

Mihai Stoichita said: "They are trying to destroy Ianis Hagi.

"It hurts a lot, we give our value players such a hard upbringing.

"We venerate them for some performances a year ago, we glorify them, and then, at the same time, we try to destroy them in two matches.

"You can't do that!"

Hagi has been left out of the senior Romania squad for the current international break, but coach Mirel Radoi insists it's just to help Adrian Mutu's Under-21 side qualify for the European Championships.

He said: "Ianis Hagi would have been called up to the senior team if Adi Mutu said he didn't need him.

"If Ianis hadn't been part of Mutu's tactical plan then he'd have been here with the senior team."
