Ian Wright sends message to Arsenal midfielder after poor Spurs performance

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has criticised Granit Xhaka for his part in Tottenham Hotspur's second goal in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners lost the game 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane on target for the hosts.

It left Mikel Arteta with plenty to contemplate with his side languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table.

Son opened the scoring after just 13 minutes before Kane doubled Spurs' advantage on the stroke of half-time.

And speaking on Match of the Day 2, Wright was critical of Xhaka for not doing enough to prevent the goal which was arguably the deciding point of the game.

"Xhaka has got to be more aware as the holding midfielder," said the pundit when asked about Arsenal's defending in the run-up to Kane's goal.

"You’ve got six players in front of you - you don’t need to be going in there as the holding guy. You should be holding out because Spurs are counter-attacking.

"I feel like that is something that should have been prevented. He’s experienced enough to know. It was very comfortable for Tottenham.

"We [Arsenal] are lacking confidence at the moment, because chances were made, but unfortunately we didn’t take them."

Wright was also critical of the Gunners' attacking threat in the final third.

Pierre Emerick-Aubemayang led the line, playing in front of attacking trio Bukayo Saka, Alexandre Lacazette and Willian.

However, Arsenal mustered just two shots on target all game and were unable to really trouble Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal.

"With the crosses as well, I think Mikel was very happy with 34 crosses," explained Wright. "But when you look at our two front men, 86 goals - not counting penalties - and they’ve only got seven headers between them.

"When you look at the way Spurs set up, they were very comfortable in those situations.

"Something has to happen - Saka is the only man on the half-turn that’s trying to create something. I thought it was a little bit better.

"They’ve got to keep going because I think the manager is the right guy, but they’ve got to find something somewhere."
