Ian Wright has already delivered his verdict on Donny van de Beek as Arsenal 'make contact'

Arsenal legend Ian Wright could get his wish in the summer transfer window.

The BT Sport and Match of the Day pundit has made no secret that he is of the opinion that Donny van de Beek should have joined the Gunners from Ajax last summer instead of Manchester United.

"Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken," Wright said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show. "When you look at [Paul] Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

"So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen, because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

"Listen, Donny van de Beek will be a good player for Man United in time because he’s a quality player.

"But is he what they need right now?"

Well, van de Beek struggled for game time at Manchester United this season and there's talk that he could be on the move this summer to get his career back on track.

And Arsenal are said to be interested in signing the Dutchman.

According to 90Min, who say while the Gunners are set to 'firm up' their interest in Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma, there has been interest in van de Beek as well.

Furthermore, the report states that Arsenal have 'made contact' with the Red Devils about the future of the Netherlands international.

If the north London outfit can seal a deal for van de Beek, it's likely that Wright would be excited about it after praising the midfielder following Man United's 2-1 win over Brighton a couple of months ago.

"But in the end the quality came through. This is brilliant from Donny van de Beek [in the build-up to United’s winner] and this is what he’s about," he said, as per the Metro.

"He’s come from a possession-based academy, that’s what he does. He makes movement. It’s great movement and leaves the space open to Bruno Fernandes."
