Ian Rush sends Man Utd title message to Liverpool as Reds storm to first Premier League

Ian Rush has told Jurgen Klopp's runaway Reds, "You don't have to win the Treble to go down as the greatest-ever Liverpool side".

Anfield legend Rush believes there is too much focus on emulating bitter rivals Manchester United's 1999 treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

He said: "If Liverpool win the League and go unbeaten all season, then why can't you compare them to that Manchester United side of 1999? No Liverpool team has ever done that.

"And, if they end up with a record points total, that adds to their case. I know, if all this happens, they have to be considered one of the greatest teams this club has had, maybe the greatest.

"Yes, the Treble would be nice, but what they are achieving in the league is phenomenal. Without a doubt, this side's on the verge of greatness."

Rush, Liverpool’s record goalscorer, was at Anfield last Tuesday night to watch the next Kop generation take the club through in the FA Cup.

He added: "The kids were excellent. The two standouts were Curtis Jones and Neco Williams. Jones had a bit of a swagger about him, but in the right way."
