Ian Murray sacked as Scottish Secretary in Keir Starmer reshuffle

IAN Murray has left Government as Keir Starmer reshuffles his Cabinet following Angela Rayner's resignation.

Murray and Lucy Powell, who served as leader of the house, are the first two ministers who have been removed from Government in the Prime Minister's reshuffle.

The now-former Scottish Secretary had held the post since the General Election.

His replacement has not yet been announced.

Murray was pictured at an event on Friday morning, and was retweeted a post of a visit with Sport Memories Scotland less than an hour before he was reportedly out of Government.

Responding to his sacking, Murray said he was “hugely disappointed” in a statement which made multiple mentions of the fact that he had been the only Scottish Labour MP in Westminster before the 2024 General Election.

He wrote: "I am hugely disappointed to be leaving government, with so much done and so much more to do, but I now look forward to spending a little more time with my wife and two beautiful girls, while continuing to serve the wonderful people of Edinburgh South."

"I will forever be proud of having helped deliver 37 Scottish Labour MPs last year," Murray went on.

"I have always felt a responsibility, having been the sole Scottish Labour MP for so long, to bring on and nurture the next generation of elected politicians and staff. I hope that has left a legacy that will thrive in years to come."

(Image: NQ)SNP MP Stephen Gethins (above), the party's Scotland spokesperson, said: “Ian Murray’s sacking is the latest sign of Labour Party acrimony. It is no wonder they have slumped 20 points behind the SNP in Scotland, when they are fighting like rats in a sack while failing to lift a finger to help families.

“Voters will not forgive the Labour Party for taking the UK from bad to worse and breaking its promise to deliver change.

"We were told things would get better but under the Labour Party food and energy bills are rising, poverty is at record levels, unemployment is at a four year high, the economy has been downgraded, public finances are deteriorating - and the vast majority of people think the UK is in a bad state and getting worse."

He added: “On a personal level, I wish Ian Murray well for the future.”

Powell also put out a statement where she said Starmer had "informed me of his intention to appoint a new Leader of the House of Commons".

"It has been an honour to serve in the firs Labour Government in 15 years, particularly as Leader of the House," she added.

She added that it had "not been an easy time for the Government".

"People want to see change and improvements in their difficult lives. Nor in politics generally, not least with the rise of abuse misrepresentation, social media echo chambers, and the call for easy answers.

"As women in public life, we experience this all the more."
