Ian Hyland on TV: On Britain's Got Talent, nothing is ever as it seems

Britain’s Got Talent, ITV

★★★

Much as I enjoyed Amanda Holden’s reaction to seeing the face of a 200-year old woman staring back at her on Saturday night, I wasn’t entirely convinced her shock was real.

I mean, surely something similar happens to her each morning before she puts her make-up on?

I was also puzzled to see some viewers crediting Britain’s Got Talent with helping them forget about Brexit for an hour.

Eh?

Could anything possibly scream Brexit more than four retired blokes from Wales repeatedly bashing their own nadgers with blunt metal instruments for no apparent reason?

Swiftly followed by ventriloquist Jimmy Tamley using some Westminster-like spin as he discussed his 40-year struggle for recognition.

“I’ve done pubs and clubs — even children’s birthday parties,” said Jimmy, forgetting to add that he won New Faces in 1987.

Of course, nothing is ever as it seems on this show.

So no one would have been too surprised when, upon closer inspection, the opening Queen lookalike turned out to look more like Jerry Springer.

I’ll happily accept Simon Cowell’s version of reality for the next two months though — as long as he accepts that for every viewer cooing over the cute kid who, ahem, spontaneously told St Ant of McPartlin-shire: “We missed you” there was probably another one calling for a bucket.

Likewise, when Dec magically turned a toy black cab into a full-sized real black cab for Ant, I can’t have been the only one muttering: “Pity he didn’t do that the day Ant got nicked for drink-driving.”
