Ian Baraclough sacked as Northern Ireland manager - how fans reacted

Many Northern Ireland fans believe it was "about time" the Irish FA sacked Ian Baraclough.

The association announced on Friday that it had "parted company" with the 51-year-old following another disappointing Nations League campaign.

Baraclough was promoted from the Under 21s in June 2020 to replace Michael O'Neill, the man who led Northern Ireland to the 2016 Euros.

Since replacing O'Neill, Baraclough won only six of his 28 games in charge inside 90 minutes, also beating Bosnia & Herzegovina on penalties, missing out on both the Covid-delayed Euro 2020 and this year’s World Cup.

In the most recent Nations League campaign Baraclough had one win from six, and five points from a possible 18.

Northern Ireland's next big target is trying to qualify for the 2024 Euro finals, and earlier this month they were handed a favourable draw.

They will line up beside Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Kazakhstan and San Marino in Group H.

The Green and White Army believe opportunity knocks, and they now want the right man in charge.

Many have been reacting to news of Baraclough's departure on social media.

Alan said: "Not before time. I can't see Michael O'Neill going back. He'll never be able to replicate his former successes with such a poor team."

Willis simply said: "Not before time."

Mark didn't hold back: "He's been useless. This is the worst we have been since Sammy McIlroy's days - and they were bleak."

James said "Long time coming" while Stu added "Bout time".

Wes said: "Worst manager since poor Sammy McIlroy."

Glenn believes Northern Ireland need a change ahead of the upcoming Euro qualifiers. He said: "The correct decision, the draw for the euro groups gives us a a massive chance and the IFA didn't want this guy in charge squandering it."

Christopher added: "During Billy Bingham's era we had some excellent players and the best goalkeeper in the world unfortunately we are scratching around in the lower divisions."

Norman said: "A team with limited capabilities success a long way off . Less talent than we have had over the past 70 years . Sacking Barraclough won’t make a difference . New stadium higher prices stupid designs of shirts that’s about it."

Anne had some sympathy for Baraclough, saying: "Hardly his fault . Simple . He doesn’t have quality players."

Conor said: "Neil Lennon to take over… get your money on it."

Thomas tipped Steven Gerrard for the job after he was sacked by Aston Villa: "Stevie G for Northern Ireland job."

Charlie added: "What about Tommy Wright he's the Wright man for the job."
