The digital era has caused online shopping to skyrocket. It’s also created a new type of thief: the porch pirate.
Porch pirates swipe packages, many containing items ordered online, from people’s porches, yards, and doorways.
One man figured out a way to exact revenge on porch pirates that will probably have them thinking twice the next time they spot an Amazon package outside his door.
Junior (@juniior2323) posted Ring camera footage that shows different people picking up packages on his doorstep. Then the TikTok cuts to footage of used cat litter complete with multiple pieces of feline fecal matter.
Junior takes the dirty cat litter and puts it in an Amazon box. Then the post shows him standing outside his doorstep with the box, which he places in the spot where his packages are delivered.
He captions the post, “Thanks for taking my cat [poop emoji].”
Now Junior is a hero of the internet.
Prevalence of porch pirate
Online shopping has been a boon for thieves. Every year, residents of the United States have 22 billion packages delivered, per Security.org.
Of these, some $12 billion worth of merchandise is swiped by thieves colloquially known as porch pirates. Security.org reports that as many as 58 million Americans may have been victims in 2024 alone.
Apartment dwellers and people of color are particularly likely to fall victim to package thieves—reportedly up to twice as likely.
If you suspect an item is stolen, you should first try to locate it by looking around and asking your neighbors. If that fails, report the theft to Amazon or the merchant you made the purchase from to inquire about a replacement or a refund.
There’s no guarantee that you will get a refund or replacement, however.
Given the prevalence and uncertainty of being compensated for the theft, it’s arguably understandable that people like Junior would get frustrated by repeated thefts and try to thwart would-be thieves. In his case, even the Ring camera seems to have proved insufficient at deterring them. So he resorted to the kitty litter surprise.
‘Make this a series bro’
Junior’s TikTok spread like wildfire. As of this writing, it has 2.7 million views and 2,100 comments.
Nobody seems to take issue with the thought of a porch pirate expecting a payday and getting cat poop instead.
“Love this,” wrote one fan. “Make this a series bro.”
Another laughed, “I wish we could see their reaction.”
Many heartily approved of Junior’s choosing the song “Snatched” by Big Boss Vette to play over the footage. “THIS SONG CHOICE IS SENDING ME,” one amused person said.
The comments section was also full of personal stories and suggestions. A surprising number of people said they would’ve used their own feces to exact revenge.
“I would’ve took it a step further and put my own [poop emoji] in that box,” wrote one.
A woman shared that she put a dirty diaper in a box once. Others referenced tales of people putting things like dog poop, black widow spiders, and a broken television in boxes to get back at porch pirates.
One urged him to call the police. Junior responded, “They won’t do anything.”
Multiple commenters suggested Junior try another method for thwarting the would-be thieves: Amazon lockers.
“Don’t forget Amazon has locker deliveries which is another alternative to get your packages delivered,” one suggested. “Edit delivery options before you check out!”
