'I walked out of my nursery job after just one hour - I'd already seen enough'

When starting a new job, you usually spend the first week meeting your colleagues and getting into the swing of things. But one woman has shared how she was thrown into the deep end at her new job - prompting her to walk out just one hour after stepping foot through the door.

She explained how she interviewed for a day care position over the phone - and was asked to start work just 24 hours later. She said: "I assumed it was just to sign papers and get the tour. They wanted me to start that day, I agreed but was very hesitant." After leaving her personal belongings in a locker, she walked through to the playroom to greet the children that she would be looking after - but she wasn't at all prepared for what she saw.

The children showed no interest in completing their homework (This content is subject to copyright.)

"I'm shocked - the room didn't seem to have very many toys and a TV was blaring," she added on Reddit.

"The teacher in the room is trying to tell me about the kids but I couldn’t really hear her over the TV.

"The kids, aged seven to 12, were out of control. I know that's just how kids act but this was different, there was no rules or expectations for the kids so they were hitting each other and roughhousing."

When the children went into the 'homework room' a short while later, she thought she'd take the opportunity to clean up the main room while another teacher watched over them.

But the youngsters showed no interest in behaving, let alone completing their school assignments.

She said: "The kids started running in and out of the room when I looked to the other teacher for help she really didn't care. That was the final straw for me, I can't work at a day care where there is absolutely no rules.

"The whole building was dirty with toys and art work - but dirty like it had not been cleaned recently. I feel guilty."

While most users agreed she made the right decision by walking out, others urged her to report the preschool to her state's childcare regulator.

One user said: "You made the correct choice. You should also report this to the relevant authorities."

Another user added: "Look up child care regulations for your state and you should be able to make a report."
