I tried the beloved Bristol café tucked away down side street

Tucked away down a side street off Stokes Croft, there is a small café that catches your eye the moment you walk past it - and while its setting is stunning, the food it serves is just as impressive.

When I visited The Bristolian on Picton Street on a weekday lunchtime, it was busy but I didn't have to queue (which is frequently the case) and I was really pleased to be given the lovely table by the bay window, where I could enjoy the sunshine. I was welcomed with a smile and found the staff to be friendly from the start.

With a menu full of eye catching options, I decided to order The Bristolian Veggie (£10.50) and they were happy to accommodate my request to swap the crispy potatoes for aubergine fritters for an extra 50p.

I also liked the fact the waiter knew the menu well and was not afraid to give me a recommendation when I asked about the turmeric-infused 'golden milk' (£3.90). As she said it was one of her favourites, I decided to take the plunge and order it.

The food took about 15 minutes to arrive, but I had to chase up the drink. I found this a tiny bit annoying but, on the other hand, the golden milk was definitely worth the wait. So beautifully presented, there was clearly an attention to detail with the presentation.

In terms of the food itself, the breakfast was a huge portion which I wasn't able to finish so, even though it may feel a bit pricey, it feels like you are getting your money's worth.

The aubergine fritters were amazing and I would say they are a must try. So crispy and full of flavour, they bring something a bit different to a typical breakfast.

I thought there were too many beans and that they were also a bit cold - but then again I am not a big fan of them and find them a bit unnecessary. However, I understand some people really like beans and expect them on a full English kind of breakfast. The garlic mushrooms, on the other hand, were excellent - very garlicky and cooked to the right point, not too soft or undercooked.

Unlike the mushrooms or the aubergines, I thought the veggie sausage was ok but nothing special while the sun dried tomatoes were a nice touch. Personally, I found the sesame infused spinach delicious and I just wished there was more of it. Like the grilled halloumi, the eggs were also really nice and runny.

If you like turmeric, The Bristolian's Golden milk is delicious and is one of the best I’ve had. It has the right balance and proportion of spices so you can definitely taste the turmeric without being overwhelming.

One of the highlights of The Bristolian has to be its gorgeous decor. You are surrounded by plants, art and bright colours so your mood is lifted the moment you walk in.

Offering delicious food, The Bristolian is a beautiful, warm and welcoming space where time seems to slow down, making you not want to leave. I'd recommend giving it a try for yourself as soon as possible.
