I tried the £28 Olaplex bonding oil for a week and people commented on how 'shiny' my hair looked

The Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil has proved extremely popular to shoppers who need to give their hair a bit of TLC.

Priced at a hefty £28 for a 30ml bottle, it's safe to say you'd expect the stuff to be made from gold for that price. With an average 4.5 star rating from shoppers on LookFantastic, the teeny tiny bottle of oil must be doing something right.

So, what does this oil actually do? Well, luxury haircare brand Olaplex claims that the product 'offers nourishment' to hair, and is infused with the same 'bond-repair technology' as the rest of the range. It promises to create a 'sleek' and 'glossy' finish on either wet or dry hair.

It has a heat protection of up to 232°C, with a formula that helps to minimise styling damage and the look of split ends whilst also protecting the hair against the effects of UV exposure. On top of all this, the No. 7 Bonding Oil is also said to offer 'shine' and will tame the appearance of 'frizz and flyaways.'

That's a lot of promises, and for someone with quite heavily bleached hair I was really interested to see if this product actually works. Despite begrudging paying £28 for the small bottle, I thought I'd put the product to the test on my partially damaged bleached hair for a whole week.

The product

First impressions? The bottle is pretty tiny, which at first I was a little disheartened by, until I actually used the product. After applying it onto my hair for the first time I realised that a little really does go a long way with this stuff - which is always a bonus.

I have a feeling that the bottle is going to last me a very long time, considering you only need a small amount to feel the real effects on your hair. The oil itself isn't too strong and doesn't leave your hair feeling greasy or wet, which is something that has always bothered me when using hair oil in the past.

Another thing I really liked about this oil was the smell, it had that expensive salon scent that you have as soon as you leave the hairdressers. Granted, the price is a little steep, but it certainly felt luxurious in my hair.

I applied the oil to my hair every day AM to PM for a week and the difference was pretty incredible. Even if I hadn't washed my hair in the morning, I'd still apply the oil to the ends of my hair when styling it and could still see the full effects.

A little goes a long way (Emily Sleight/ Liverpool ECHO)

As each day went by, my hair felt softer and sleeker and had a definite shine to it. It actually got to the point where people were commenting on the shine of my hair, which is something I'd never really experienced before.

All I did was apply a pea sized amount to the ends of my hair and a little on my flyaways to really notice the difference. My hair felt a lot softer and less dry, which is something I've been wanting to tackle for ages.

After a week of using this oil, my hair felt pampered and nourished. I'm very guilty of neglecting my hair which has often led to it snapping from excessive bleach, but now I've found a solution.

I've been a big fan of the Olaplex range for a while, and although it's expensive, there are plenty of affordable dupes out there. I'm yet to find a dupe for this bonding oil, but I'd still highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give their hair a good pamper.

Admittedly, I've been pretty lazy with oil in the past, often under the impression it really doesn't do a great deal, but this product worked wonders. As a little tip, you really don't need a lot of this bonding oil, if you apply too much to your hair it can appear slightly greasy - you only need a small amount!

The verdict

Is this bottle worth £28? Shockingly - yes, I think it is. I probably wouldn't have said so if the oil ran out after a few days, but I've already been using this product for over a week and I've still basically got the full bottle left.

I'd say the bottle is going to last me at least two months, which in my opinion, makes it pretty good value for money. I'd definitely recommend taking the plunge if you fancy exploring the Olaplex range some more, but I'll warn you, their stuff can be pretty addictive (which is not good for anyone's bank balance.)

The thin consistency of the oil makes it perfect for nourishing the hair without any added grease and it really goes a long way. That, on top of the amazingly shiny finish it gives my hair, and you've got a winner.
