'I tried healthier 90-calorie doughnuts - they weren't what I expected'

Ah doughnuts. The magnificent golden treats are universally adored and make a perfect addition to any British outing, whether you are visiting a funfair or the seaside.

No matter where you are, a waft of dough sizzling away can be hard to resist.

But it is a sad truth that doughnuts are far from good for your health.

And if for whatever reason you are choosing to be mindful of your calorie consumption, then they might not be a great choice.

Thankfully, Fibre One has come to the rescue with their newly released 90-calorie doughnuts.

Available in two different flavours, they are intended so you can indulge without having to worry about the calorie count. And as the name suggests, they are designed to be high in fibre, so it sounds like a win-win.

But do they deliver on taste? Eager to find out if the treats are as good as they sound, we gave them a go.

First up on the menu were the chocolate doughnuts, which were quickly followed by the strawberry and cream flavour.

I'm sad to report the doughnuts were not exactly what I expected.

Besides the small size - think something larger than satsumas but smaller than oranges - they did not look overly inviting.

As you can see, the strawberry doughnut struggled to survive in the heat. While I did try them during a heatwave, I had hoped they could withstand some warmth, as I'm not one for storing doughnuts in the fridge.

Surprisingly, the chocolate did fare a lot better, but it still didn't look the most appetising.

But what about the taste?

To be completely honest, these were not the most delicious doughnuts I've ever had.

That is not to say they tasted awful, but they did not taste great either.

Even as a self-proclaimed sugar addict, I couldn't get over the artificial-tasting flavour.

While the taste might not be mind-blowing, you do get to enjoy a couple of bites of something that somewhat closely resembles higher-calorie doughnuts, so if you are a dough fanatic, they could be worth a try.

And Fibre One has definitely come up with an in-demand product, as both flavours are currently out of stock at Tesco, where they sell at RRP £2.89.

If you're giving them a go, I recommend the strawberry and cream flavour - my clear winner - even though it tastes more of strawberries than cream, since it goes down smoother than the too-rich chocolate.
