I tried Domino's £16.99 'Big Brekkie' pizza and it was not what I expected - review

I've always joked with my friends about how a breakfast pizza should be a thing, so you can imagine my reaction when Domino's actually launched one.

The 'Big Brekkie' pizza launched this September and includes toppings such as sausage, smoked bacon, mushroom and tomatoes with a choice of either brown or tomato sauce depending on what you fancy. It seems like this particular pizza has divided Domino's fans, so I wanted to see what it really tasted like.

I'm a huge fan of Domino's pizza, so I had really high hopes for the new brekkie addition. I did have a few concerns though, was it going to be greasy? Heavy? Would someone even want to eat this in the morning? Let's find out.

The pizza

My local Domino's didn't open until 11am so I skipped breakfast and found myself very hungry by 12pm. I opted for a small pizza since I was on my own and didn't want to be left with loads of pizza if I didn't like it.

My 'Big Brekkie' pizza arrived fresh and smelt absolutely unreal. After toying between tomato or brown sauce, I went for the classic tomato and I'm so glad I did.

In terms of aesthetics, this pizza looked surprisingly good! It didn't appear out of the ordinary or weird, and even the tomato sauce was applied on top in quite a neat fashion.

It included big thick slices of Cumberland sausage and smooth crispy bacon with just the right amount of sauce. The mushrooms were a little slimy, but I wasn't expecting them to be perfect because mushrooms can be a hit and miss anyway.

As I took a bite I was surprised at how utterly light this pizza was. When you think of a breakfast pizza, you think huge, greasy and stodgy, but this pizza did everything right.

There was no grease on the toppings and the tomato sauce didn't overpower the pizza which was what I was worried about. The dough was light and fluffy and honestly, I can see why people would choose to have this for a weekend brekkie treat.

Don't get me wrong, this definitely isn't something you could eat on a daily basis, but on a hungover weekend or if you fancy something different, it's a great option. The cheese also worked really well with the breakfast ingredients which I was also a little dubious, so that's another tick from me.

One thing I will say is the price of this pizza was a little steep at £16.99 for the small and £21.99 for a large. In total, with delivery, I paid £18.49 for a small pizza, which seems rather expensive to me considering you can get a cooked breakfast at my local café for just over a fiver.

I do know that with places like Domino's it's all about the convenience of the delivery and the brand itself though. Since the pizza was actually really good I can let that slide.

The verdict

The toppings were top quality, the tomato sauce really complemented the ingredients and the dough was beautifully fresh. I was very impressed.

I'm still so surprised at how light this pizza was, which is why I'd definitely order it again. There were so many delicious flavours on the pizza that weren't ruined by the sauce, and I'm so glad about that.

One thing I will say though, is that if you don't like mushrooms, you might have to take them off, because they were a tad slimy on my pizza - but personally, that didn't bother me.

All I can say is well done for Domino's Pizza for creating this absolute gem of a pizza, something that I've actually been wanting for a while and now I've got it. It lived up to my expectations and it's a winner for me.
