'I spoke to him' - Virgil van Dijk reveals role in Cody Gakpo Liverpool transfer

Virgil van Dijk has explained his role in Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo.

The Reds confirmed the signing of the versatile forward from PSV Eindhoven earlier in the week. Gakpo will officially become a Liverpool player when the transfer window opens on New Year’s Day.

Gakpo was at Anfield to watch his new club in Premier League action against Leicester City. Liverpool claimed a 2-1 victory to finish 2022 with a precious three points.

Van Dijk was taking part in interview duty after the match, and was asked about Liverpool’s new signing. The Reds defender spoke about what he expects from the latest addition, and the role he played in Gakpo’s arrival.

“Hopefully a lot,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports, when asked what he expects to see from Gakpo in a Liverpool shirt.

“A good player, good boy and obviously I know how it is to come in January. We have to give him time, I’m very sure the Liverpool fans will give it time, we’re family and the real ones will always back him. He has to keep his head down, no matter what happens, fight, enjoy the moment and be important for the football club.

When asked if he had a role in Gakpo signing, Van Dijk replied: “No, that was over exaggerated.

“I spoke to him, I can only say good things because I’m here, enjoying my time, we’ve been very successful.

“But the manager said it as well, if it was me it was an easy decision to make, I didn’t need convincing.

“If there were any questions, I answered them honestly. I’m glad he’s here and get started as quickly as possible.”
