'I put €30 in a card for my postman but not everyone agrees with Christmas gesture'

There is a long-standing Christmas tradition in Ireland of giving cash or gifts to people who provide us with services all year including the postman, the milkman and binmen.

In the spirit of the season of giving, many people put some money in an envelope or leave a box of chocolates by the door to thank them for their hard work over the past year.

But the generous gesture has come under fire as some people say they already get paid for their job.

One woman took to Twitter to ask what amount she should give her postie this year, writing: "Is €30 enough to put in the card for the postman?"

A postman replied: "I'll be honest, I would be jumping for joy if I got €30 in a card. €30 is a good chunk of change, but if you feel that he or she is worth it, then go for it."

And it seems that many others follow the same tradition, with people revealing they give at least €20 to their postman.

One Twitter user replied: "I always give a few quid to our lovely post man at Christmas. We have been blessed with all wonderful postmen over the years."

Another added: "I didn’t feel over generous putting in 20 euros (and a bar of posh chocolate). Postmen are wonderful!"

And one man said he would give more as the postman has to be out in all kinds of weather, writing: "30 not enough. 50 good sum the man is at your door wind and rain or sunshine."

However, the Christmas tip split opinion with some people suggesting that the postman is just doing his job.

One said: "[€30] is more than enough, you don't have to."

Another cheekily replied: "I thought they were paid by an post?"

A third said: "A tip is a bit over the top for doing the basic requirement of your job [in my opinion]."

And a fourth said that if you tip one service provider, you should also tip others, writing: "How much did you put in the card for the girl on the till at your local supermarket?"
