In a video with over 2 million views, TikToker Ali (@uwuali) stands outside of his car at the Costco gas station. He paces around as if waiting for the gas to finish pumping.
However, he isn’t actually pumping gas.
Why did he pretend to pump gas at Costco?
On-screen text reads, “That time I forgot my Costco card and pretended to fill up gas so people didn’t think I was an idiot that thought you didn’t need the membership.”
While Costco’s gas pump requires a membership card, Redditors on r/costco suggest there may have been a way around his dilemma. For members who forget their card or only use the mobile membership card, they may be able to call over an attendant for assistance.
“I lost my card and only use the app. Last time I got gas I just waved over the attendant, showed him my membership on the app and he swiped a card,” one writes.
“I have an international Costco card but live in the US. I have to show the attendant my card and then he swipes the master card for me,” another says.
“I’ve seen people ask/tell the person that they use the mobile app card thing and he swipes a card for you,” a third adds.
