I myself didn't know how I got into the Pakistan team for Champions Trophy: Khushdil Shah

NEW DELHI: Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah has admitted he was surprised by his selection for the Champions Trophy, acknowledging his underwhelming performances and stating that even he is unsure how he made it into the squad.

Khushdil, a left-handed middle-order batter, played a valiant knock of 69 off 49 deliveries in Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand. However, his efforts were in vain as the hosts fell to a 60-run defeat in Karachi on Wednesday.

Since making his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in November 2020, the 30-year-old has featured in just 14 one-day internationals and has not played a T20I since October 2023.

His recent performances, particularly in the tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa, were below par, yet he found himself in the playing XI for the crucial Champions Trophy clash, where he emerged as Pakistan’s top scorer.

Reflecting on his unexpected inclusion, Khushdil candidly remarked, "I myself didn't know how I got into the team because I have been out of favour with the selectors for two years now."

The left-arm spinner also addressed the criticism he faces from fans, who often label him as a "Parchi"—a term used to describe players who are perceived to be selected based on favoritism rather than merit. However, Khushdil remains unfazed.

"I don't take it to heart because you can't stop people from saying what they say. The only way to respond is by giving my best and contributing to the team's success," he said.

The PCB selectors have come under scrutiny for picking Khushdil over Faheem Ashraf, a decision that has sparked debate among fans and analysts.

Despite New Zealand setting a daunting 321-run target, Khushdil remained optimistic. He revealed that he and Naseem Shah believed that if they could take the match into the final over, anything was possible.
