‘I’m very Nick from New Girl-coded’: Woman goes on date with ‘nice guy.’ Then her Ring camera captures what he says at her door

A first date is basically like a job interview. Except that the job you’re interviewing for is a relationship. Naturally, people typically try to put their best foot forward, particularly if they’re interested in the person.

One woman’s date may have inadvertently revealed who he really is at the end of the night. If it weren’t for her Ring doorbell camera, it could’ve taken much longer for her to learn his true character.

Earlier this week, Chase Hofer (@chase.hofer) posted the footage that’s purportedly from the end of their date.

The TikTok went massively viral. As of this writing, it has 20.4 million views.

Hofer captions it, “Self proclaimed ‘nice guy’ showed his true colors last night at the end of our date.”

In Hofer’s post, her date is standing outside her door. From inside, she thanks him for dropping her off.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come in for a drink?” he says through the door. “I’m an excellent bartender.”

“We can watch some New Girl. I’m very Nick-coded,” he adds, referring to the character played by Jake Johnson in the series starring Zooey Deschanel.

Hofer demurs, saying that she’s tired and perhaps next time he can come in. Her date appears willing to accept this.

After they say their goodbyes, he slowly takes a step back.

Apparently unaware he’s on camera, he suddenly says in a mocking tone, “Oh and thanks for paying for dinner by the way, by the way. But you can’t come inside. Why not? Why can’t you come inside? Because you were nice to me all night.”

Then he finally leaves.

People were universally appalled by the man’s behavior. Men assuming that paying for their date’s meal or drinks means they’re owed some sort of physical contact is a tired and often offensive behavior, which is how many took Hofer’s date’s remarks.

“Why do they think being nice and 30 dollars means they deserve whatever they want?” actress Jess Adams commented on her post.

Another person suggested she text him the video. A top-liked comment states, “I feel secondhand embarrassment from this.”

The next chapter

Hofer alleges that her date returned the day after she put him on an ice-cold internet blast. He was highly displeased.

“Congrats on going viral. Congrats on losing an ally as well,” he says tartly in the second TikTok.

Then he fishes several books out of his bag.

“You can have all these female written author books. I don’t want them anymore,” he says as he sets them down.

“Guess I’ll just start being mean to girls now.” Then he leaves in a huff.

The second TikTok also went viral. It has 1.3 million views as of Wednesday afternoon.

Too viral to be true?

Hofer’s second post inspired some similarly appalled reactions as her first one.

“Oh he was never gunna actually be nice to girls,” wrote one. A second person suggested she get a restraining order on the man.

The top comments are largely from people who no longer believe either TikTok is real, however.

“Damn you had me with the first video. It’s not real y’all,” reads a comment with nearly 29,000 likes.

Hofer pushed back on such claims. When someone said, “Please tell me this is satire,” she commented, “I wish.”

@chase_hofer Hey… if you’re seeing this surprise! :) Hope you find someone else who will match your energy:) #fypシ #dating #hinge #pickme ♬ original sound – Chase Hofer

Hofer didn’t immediately respond to emails sent Wednesday.
