Former President Donald Trump repeatedly said “I’m just not going to leave” to his aides in the days following his defeat in the 2020 general elections, a new book reveals.

He was claiming to cling onto the White House rather than let incoming President Joe Biden take over, according to reporting provided to CNN from a forthcoming book by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

“I’m just not going to leave,” Mr Trump told one aide, according to Ms Haberman, and repeated similair statements to others.

The relevations cast a fresh light to the tumultuous days that followed the election which led to the attack on the US Capital by pro-Trump supporters on January 6, 2021.

Ms Haberman’s book, titled ‘Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America’, is being released on October 4.

The revelations from the book come as investigators in the US House and the Justice Department probe Trump’s refusal to cede power after the 2020 election.

The House select committee investigating January 6 is planning more hearings and a final report, while federal investigators have recently served several former Trump aides with legal papers.

Publicly, Trump dismissed questions about whether he would leave office at the time.

A longtime New York-based reporter who has worked for both of the city’s tabloid newspapers, Ms Haberman writes tha his post-election period was reminiscent of his attempts to claw his way back from difficult financial challenges three decades earlier.
