I'm a Staunch Maximalist, but Kim Kardashian's Ultra-Minimalist Living Room is So Tranquil That I'm Reconsidering Monochrome Interiors

Kim kardashian.

I would describe my interior style as somewhere between grand-millennial and dopamine decor; that is to say, the spaces I love tend to be drenched in color, pattern, and frilly details. That's why my love for Kim Kardashian's living room took me completely off guard.

The Skims mogul's style is famously minimalist and generally monochromatic, and her self-professed 'fav room in [her] house' is no different. Everything in the space is cream, from the curved sofa to the boucle chairs, down to the Lucio Fontana artwork over the fireplace. Somehow, rather than feeling clinical, Kim's living room is the pinnacle of calm and welcoming to me.

Not everyone will agree: the comments on her Instagram post of her California living room idea are quite mixed. 'Nothing warm. Nothing cozy. Nothing inviting. Nothing,' says one commenter. Another replies: ' it’s void of any warmth, creativity, imagination or actual life.' However, others are much more positive, asking about the paint color, replying that they want to decorate their homes in this style, and calling it their dream space. So, what makes Kim's living room so appealing to me? To start, although it's monochromatic, I think this space is full of life and warmth.

Recreate Kim's Look at Home

Rather than integrating personality with color, Kim fills her home with character through texture. The plush rug, wooden coffee table, and boucle chair create contrast despite their similarity of tone. These variations in texture create an effect of the creams and whites of the room appearing distinct enough from one another that it doesn't even feel like everything is the same color.

Another element I admire about Kim's living room is her use of curves in interior design. Organic shapes create a connecting thread throughout the space. From the rounded coffee table to the curved sofa and even the diagonal lines of the painting, every element of the space takes the eye on a journey. This makes the room feel complex, emotive, and tranquil, even when it's all cream.

Though I won't be decorating my home in all cream anytime soon, Kim's space opened my eyes to the fact that neutral spaces can be just as evocative as maximalist homes.
