I'm A Celeb's Simon Gregson hoping castle will help him finally lose lockdown weight

Coronation Street 's Simon Gregson says he hopes going on I'm A Celebrity will help him finally lose his lockdown weight.

The Steve McDonald actor dubbed himself "fat" as he admitted he's hoping swapping pies for a diet of rice and beans will do him a big favour.

The 47-year-old, who joined the ITV reality show last night alongside EastEnders legend Adam Woodyatt, said that he "desperately" needs to lose weight.

And he could get his wish, as many celebs have famously lost weight after a few weeks on the show.

He told The Sun : "It is a bit of a hard schlep to do because of course the food isn't great - rice and beans all the time.

"But for me it's a bonus. I desperately need to lose weight so I'm looking at it like the worst boot camp in the world."

He added of the challenges: "I just hope there's not too much physical activity stuff. I used to be very fit, now I'm just very fat.

"Hopefully I'll bring something to the table, you never know."

Simon admitted that he'd planned during his two weeks of quarantine to lower his food intake, spend time in the gym and shift his sleep pattern to fit with the late filming schedule of the show, but that he just ended up "eating pies and enjoying life to its full".

The soap legend also admitted to the Mirror that he was nervous about people seeing a different side to him.

He said: "I think it will be nice for people who are fans of the show to see a different side. How big a difference that side is yet to be seen! They might just be like, 'Oh my god, he's just like Steve!'

"So yeah, it will be nice for people to see a different side."

Confessing his nerves, he added: "When you're doing something like this, if nerves get the better of you, it's kind of hard to show your true side anyway! So maybe it's time to relax and tell some stories, so they'll get to see a different side. But who knows!

"I might be a complete ball of nerves and won't be able to speak at all!"

* I'm A Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV
