'I lost myself' – Russell Martin reveals depths he plunged to during Swansea City's barren run

Russell Martin says he "lost himself" and blames himself for Swansea City's poor run of results earlier this year.

The Swans were firm play-off contenders prior to the World Cup but fell away from the Championship's top six following a run of just three wins in 21 league outings.

However, they have stabilised things of late and are back to within striking distance of the top half having collected 10 of the last 12 points on offer.

And Martin says his personal development in recent months has been monumental while the head coach also said he was at fault for his side's poor sequence of results.

"What I've come to find is an acceptance of everything," he explained. "Football is a crazy game, and it's only because people really care.

"It was difficult but I don't think we'll ever go through a tougher period. If we do, I don't think it'll feel as tough because of what we've learned through this period and that's to be authentic.

"Being really honest I lost myself for a couple of weeks. I think it affected the team, so it's my fault. My energy changed, I was frustrated, I was pretty angry. It's not really my personality.

"It affected everyone, I'm pretty sure, so it was my fault. I hope the change in energy has been down to us looking at ourselves a bit and hopefully passing on less of that energy to the players and trying to get back to what we were and who we were.

"I think we've done that. The team have done that and I'm really proud of them. I learnt so much through that period. I think if it ever happens again I'll be much better prepared for it."

The Swans bid to continue their resurgence when they host in-form Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers appeared destined to be relegated to League One but have claimed 11 of the last 15 points available to move out of the Championship's bottom three ahead of their trip to south Wales.

And Martin lavished praise on Neil Warnock for the remarkable turnaround he has overseen with the west Yorkshire outfit.

"We want to win as many games as we possibly can, that has to be the challenge," added the head coach. "Every player at this stage of the season is motivated by something different. Whether that's because you might be leaving, whether you're trying to earn a new contract or whether you genuinely just want to get into the team and make sure for next season you're in the manager's thoughts.

"There's all of that going on. We have a brilliant group of players, the energy is so good. We have real selection problems at the minute. We've got three games in a week so I'm pretty sure everyone's going to get on the pitch at some point.

"We're playing against a team that's really fighting on Saturday. Neil's done an incredible job there, it's amazing what he's done in the last five games, so that'll be a very tough game. Then we go to two teams with play-off aspirations, we can impact things a lot in the next three games.

"It's a big week for us to show how far we've come and how much we've grown from that period."

The Swans have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the clash with Huddersfield. Kick-off against the Terriers is at 3pm on Saturday.
