'I hope these ***** get it" Thug went on Covid rant and tried to spit on Scots cops probing bottle attack

A lung disease sufferer claimed he had Covid-19 and tried to spit on police who visited his home after he'd been bottled.

William Cowan, who has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, lashed out after officers attended reports of a disturbance.

The 49-year-old also tried to bite and kick police who took him to hospital.

Cowan lost control at his home in Paisley, Renfrewshire, on September 12 last year.

He was arrested and taken to the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard how he told a nurse he was suffering from Covid-19 and said, "I have got all the symptoms. I hope these ***** get it.".

Prosecutor Ed Sheeran said: "He tried to draw phlegm from the back of his throat and turned his head towards an officer, suggesting he was attempting to spit at his head.

"Control measures were used to prevent him from spitting."

Cowan was then taken to the floor but lashed out, trying to kick two police officers and bite them on their hands.

He pled guilty to two charges of assaulting police officers.

The court heard Cowan was "absolutely mortified" by his "disgraceful course of conduct towards people who were only trying to help him".

Solicitor Tony Boland added: "He had been assaulted with a glass bottle and he was intoxicated.

"He cannot begin to explain why his demeanour changed that evening towards the officers.

"He deeply regrets his actions that evening."

Sheriff Brian Mohan placed him on a Community Payback Order.

He will be supervised by social workers for 12 months and expected to carry out 280 hours' unpaid work in the community.
