'I don't want to go out' - Residents annoyed over slippery leaves in The Meadows

Some residents in The Meadows say they are sick of fallen leaves that have become slippery on footpaths.

One pensioner even said it made her not want to leave the house.

Leaves falling on footpaths have become soggy and wet, with some residents saying they are annoyed that they were not cleared.

The council said it sent teams out to clear away fallen leaves on Thursday, December 5.

Some of the worst affected areas have included Ryeland Gardens, Arkwright Walk, Burge Close, Humber Close and footpaths between Robin Hood Way and Wilford Crescent West.

Local resident Janet Barker, 77, said: "I don't want to go out of my house sometimes because of it. I'm worried of slipping and hurting myself especially nearer to the steeper footpaths. I'm not very steady.

"It's been like this for weeks. I've seen other areas cleared of leaves and I think we're being missed out here."

She added: "I understand it's nature, but I just think a bit more care is needed to sort it out, especially for older people."

Karen Mellows, 59, of The Meadows, said: "I just looks a bit of a mess, dirty clumps of brown leaves. They're everywhere and are really annoying to walk on.

"Speaking to neighbours about it, it's a big issue for some, especially older people.

"The council have been out and about (on Thursday) which is good to see. It's well-needed."

Martha Kelson, 66, of The Meadows, added: "I am sick to death of seeing them. I hate this time of year anyway when it is cold and wet.

"I think they are an eyesore and a slip hazard. I wish they got cleared."

Nottingham City Council said it had sent teams out to The Meadows to clear away fallen leaves on Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Our crews have been out in these areas clearing the leaves.

"It’s part of ongoing operations across the city to ensure autumn leaves are cleared away to remove slip hazards as soon as possible.

"It’s a big task but our teams do a great job and will do their best to respond if there is a particular problem needing swift attention.”

People can report issues by calling on 0115 915 2000 or through online forms at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
