'I don't live with regrets' - Matz Sels on his ill-fated spell at Newcastle United

Former Newcastle United Matz Sels insists he has no regrets about his decision to move to Tyneside - despite a disappointing two-year spell in England.

The Belgian shot-stopper was Rafa Benitez's first signing for the Magpies in the summer of 2016 following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Arriving from Gent for £6.5million, Sels was handed the number one jersey and started the opening nine games of the season.

But the goalkeeper was dropped following a string of unsteady displays, and failed to regain his place in the Magpies' starting eleven.

Sels was loaned to Anderlecht for the 2017/18 campaign before being sold at a loss to Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg in the summer of 2018.

The 27-year-old has rebuilt his reputation in France, and has previously spoken of his belief United fans will one day view him as a 'good signing' .

Speaking to Belgian title Walfoot, Sels admits he was not at his best for the Magpies and hope he is given the chance to prove himself at the highest level in the near future.

The goalkeeper said: “I don’t live with regrets. It’s the past and it’s already a few years ago.

"It was my first experience abroad. I had some family issues and wasn’t at my best, even if there is no excuse.

“I hope to get another chance in the future to prove myself at the highest level. Maybe not like Thibaut Courtois at Real Madrid, but, you know… (smiles)”.
