Erling Haaland has suggested that he saved Gabriel from being sent-off in Manchester City’s win over Arsenal.
Haaland and Gabriel endured a running battle all afternoon at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with the Man City striker ultimately getting the last laugh to provide another twist to the Premier League title race.
The Norwegian struck what turned out to be the winning goal shortly after the hour mark, moving City to within three points of Arsenal at the top of the table.
However, there was a flashpoint late on as the Gunners were rather fortunate to have kept all 11 players on the pitch.
Following a tussle between Gabriel and Haaland, they came face-to-face before the former leaned his head forward, but the apparent ‘headbutt’ was punished with a yellow card.
The Premier League have since explained why the Brazilian avoided a red card, but Haaland believes his decision to stay on his feet proved decisive.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Haaland said: “I think if I fell on the floor there, which I would not do unless someone really attacks me, I think maybe it would be a red card. I’m not sure.
“I haven’t seen the situation to be honest but it is what it is.
“I will not fall on the floor as easy as this. Yellow card for me, I don’t know why. He [Gabriel] comes up to my face, it is what it is.”
Haaland and Man City are back in action on Wednesday night against Burnley. Victory at Turf Moor will see Pep Guardiola’s side go top of the Premier League table.
