I discussed Rangers with Steven Gerrard - I reckon he'd return to Ibrox job

Rio Ferdinand has revealed his belief that Steven Gerrard would return to Rangers as manager.

The pundit is certain the former Rangers boss would at the very least hold talks over a possible return to Ibrox as manager.

Gerrard has been heavily linked with the vacant Rangers post since Russell Martin was sacked on Sunday following a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

Ibrox chiefs are now searching for a new manager to turn their fortuens this season and lift the club from eighth in the league table, with just one win from seven in the league.

Gerrard, who admitted there is a feeling of unfinished business over his management career talked up his time at Rangers on Ferdinand's podcast on Tuesday.

Reflecting on his first spell at Ibrox, he added: "I got the opportunity to go to Rangers and I loved it. Rangers, I felt like it was the perfect match. And it went on from there.”

And the discussion left Ferdinand in little doubt that Gerrard would be interested in taking on the Rangers job again if the opportunity arose.

On talkSPORT, Ferdinand explained: "I have to say when I interviewed him, he left me in no uncertain terms that he wants to be a manager and he's got full confidence in doing that.

"He's itching to get back in now. He never said this to me, but I personally think just the energy that I felt in that room, that if Rangers came calling he'd go or at least have that conversation.

"What I felt, if I was an owner of a football club and Steven Gerrard was sat in front of me and I felt that energy in the room when I was interviewing him - he's getting the job.

"Forget what's gone on before. But also his time before at Rangers, he did great there. I've never had so many Rangers fans flood the comments on my social media or podcast.

"They are all desperate for him to go up and at least have a conversation and a meeting. So I wouldn't be surprised if Steven Gerrard is a manager again and Rangers would probably be one of my big bets."
