'I cleaned my neighbour's drive and they sent me a cruel note about trespassing'

Getting new neighbours can be a difficult transition, particularly if you struck up a good relationship with the people who lived next door previously as your expectations will be set high.

First impressions count, so you might try off to get off to a good start by bringing a gift over or making them feel welcome another way.

One man who tried to do a good deed for his new neighbour soon regretted it as he faced savage backlash from the family next door.

After the bloke cleared the neighbours' driveway of snow to give a helping hand, they decided to leave him a note explaining that they were not happy with his simple act of kindness.

Taking to Reddit, the man, who remained anonymous, explained: "They are a young American couple that just moved from the USA to Canada last week. Last night we had a few inches of snow and as usual I took out of my snowblower and started cleaning the driveway.

"With my old neighbour we would usually have a beer and shovel together. The new neighbour wasn't outside so I went ahead and cleaned his driveway with my snowblower.

"Later I got a piece of paper on my car saying that I should not trespass on their property and that my act is not welcome. I'm surprised so I just wanted to know I’ve crossed any boundary with them. Thanks."

In an update to the post, he conceded that he will not go onto their driveway again and will just create a line in the middle of the snow.

But he was still seeking advice as to whether he crossed the line with them.

In response, many sided with him as one person wrote: "What you did was perfectly neighbourly and would have been considered welcome by the vast majority of people."

While another stated: "You did something neighbourly and they responded in an un-neighbourly fashion."

A third penned: "You did a good deed that would be welcomed by 99% of people. Not sure what their problem is, now you know for next time not to even try to be neighbourly."
