When selecting a vehicle in your retirement years, you might want to spring for an SUV. While there are plenty of SUVs out there, some may be better than others, especially for the budgets and needs of retirees.

GOBankingRates turned to ChatGPT to see which SUVs it said aren’t good fits for retirees. Here are four SUVs ChatGPT claims aren’t good options for retirees.
Jeep Wrangler
First on ChatGPT’s list of SUVs for retirees to avoid was the rugged and recognizable Jeep Wrangler. Specifically, the chatbot suggested steering clear of Jeep Wranglers due to the rough ride quality, which might not be comfortable for older drivers seeking a smooth ride.
Additionally, ChatGPT pointed out that Wranglers can be difficult to enter and exit, “especially with lifted trims or two door-models,” it said.
When rounded off with a louder cabin and poor fuel economy, it’s easy to see why the Wrangler might not suit the needs of many retired drivers.

Toyota C-HR
As of 2026, the Toyota C-HR is an all-electric ride with a sharp-looking exterior. But ChatGPT doesn’t think it’s a good fit for retirees.
The chatbot pointed out visibility issues, including “thick rear pillars [that] make it hard to see.” Since everyone, especially retirees, can benefit from easy visibility options, this may not be the best choice. Additionally, it cited “cramped rear seats and limited cargo space,” which could make this a less-than-ideal option for any grandparents hoping to take their grandkids on adventures.
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport made ChatGPT’s list as a bad fit for retirees.
The chatbot called out the vehicle’s outdated tech, noisy cabin and lower safety scores as reasons to avoid this option.
Land Rover Discovery Sport
The Land Rover Discovery Sport offers retirees a smaller take on a traditional Land Rover. But ChatGPT said it’s not a good option.
For starters, the chatbot pointed out that “expensive maintenance and poor reliability” make for a bad vehicle choice. Additionally, it noted the complex electronics are prone to failure. When topped off with steep depreciation, ChatGPT deemed this ride to be “not great for retirement budgets.”
What To Prioritize in Your Retirement SUV
Everyone has different priorities when choosing a vehicle. But ChatGPT recommended that retiree drivers looking for an SUV consider the following:
- Comfortable ride
- Easy access and a low step-in height
- Good safety features
- Fuel efficiency
- User-friendly technology
- High reliability ratings.
Additionally, it’s important to consider the cost and how it fits into your retirement budget. For many retirees, opting for a reliable ride that doesn’t break the bank is the best choice.
Picking the right ride in retirement involves many factors. While ChatGPT offers one opinion on the wrong SUVs for retirees, you’ll ultimately need to consider multiple opinions and all of your options before moving forward.
