I asked ChatGPT to rank the most iconic chocolate bars for World Chocolate Day — do you agree with No. 1?

Who doesn’t love a good debate?

I’m among the many out there that gets excited when a friend presents the group with the sort of question that will have us passionately discuss for hours on end. It doesn’t matter if it’s an extra loud dialogue about the best music, clothing brands, cartoons, or albums—me and everyone in my vicinity will get caught up in all the dialogue and state their cases until the sun goes down. As long as nobody gets hurt while explaining the greatness of their top pick for best anime of all time, everyone has a good time.

To properly commemorate World Chocolate Day, I thought of the perfect way to do it. And that method involved my good old digital compadre, ChatGPT. I went ahead and asked it for its top 10 ranking of the most iconic chocolate bars in the world.

After checking out its picks, I most definitely agree with its No. 1 pick—but do you agree with its undisputed best selection?

For a ranking as important as this one, I had to generate a prompt that covers every qualification for the world’s finest chocolate bars and make sure there was a clear directive to work from. Here’s what the chatbot managed to produce:

Act as a food historian, confectionery expert, and cultural critic.

Create a definitive ranking of the 10 most iconic chocolate bars in the world.

Don't simply rank them by sales or personal preference. Instead, evaluate each bar using these weighted criteria:

Ultimately, those combined results favored chocolate bars that transcended borders, became an integral part of pop culture and defined modern confectionery (which is the art of making confections, which in turn is defined as sweet foods that are rich in sugar).

So which chocolate bar did ChatGPT crown as the most iconic in the world? Snickers! The chatbot’s standout reason for making that pick noted how it’s become synonymous with the term “chocolate bar” and has remained as one of the most consistent filling meal-like snacks on the market.

Its world-renowned combination of chocolate, caramel, peanuts, and nougat was acknowledged as practically undefeated when it comes to taste factor. Plus the fact that it’s sold in well over 100 countries gives it the edge over the competition.

I was pretty shocked when I realized some of the chocolate bars I hold so dear to my heart were omitted from the chatbot’s top 10. ChatGPT actually produced a section that mentioned a few of those omissions and gave a reason as to why it didn’t make its list. The biggest miss for me from that chatbot’s list was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but the chatbot’s reasoning for not mentioning it made total sense when I sat back and calmed down for its perceived error:

My AI companion chose the world’s most iconic chocolate bar, which I expected it to choose. As a card-carrying member of the Snickers Fan Club, that result made me quite happy and justified in buying a party-size pack of Snickers bars on World Chocolate Day.

To put a cap on this tasty debate, ChatGPT explained why Snickers edged out KitKat for the #1 spot:

KitKat arguably has the stronger marketing slogan and greater international variation, but Snickers edged it because it fundamentally changed expectations of what a chocolate bar could be: a satisfying, protein-rich snack rather than simply candy.
