
A Georgia woman said she was stunned when her Amazon order went spectacularly wrong. Instead of the king-size mattress she had purchased, the delivery truck dropped off a toilet.
In a TikTok video that has drawn more than 30,000 views, Ashlynn (@qissmyash) recounted the mix-up.
“I ordered a king-sized mattress off of Amazon,” she said. “I pull up to the house after running some errands and they’re delivering it. Tell me why this thing came in a toilet box. I asked the guys, ‘Is that a toilet?’ They go, ‘Yes ma’am.’ [But] I didn’t order a toilet.”
Ashlynn unboxed the delivery to confirm her suspicion, still wondering if somehow it could be a mattress. Inside the large cardboard container was a toilet kit, not the mattress she expected.
In a follow-up, she said she managed to reach Amazon customer service, which arranged to pick up the unwanted item. The company promised to send the correct mattress by the following Wednesday. Even so, she said she remained baffled by how the switch happened in the first place.
How often does a switch-up at Amazon happen?
Ashlynn’s case struck a nerve because she is far from the only Amazon customer to receive the wrong item. From minor inconveniences to major scams, consumers frequently report that their packages do not match their orders.
On Reddit, one shopper claimed they purchased a $1,000 camera but instead received a box filled with shampoo bottles. According to the customer, the bottles were packed in a sealed Canon box. The listed shipping weight read 2.2 pounds, but the package actually weighed 3.7 pounds. They suspected the scam originated either from a fraudulent return or within Amazon’s logistics chain. Despite repeated complaints, they said Amazon refused to issue a refund, concluding its investigation without resolving the matter.
Other customers, however, reported easier resolutions. One commenter said they contacted Amazon after a similar mistake, received a replacement immediately, and simply dropped the incorrect item off at a UPS store with a prepaid label.
Explanations for such mix-ups vary. Some blame scammers who exploit Amazon’s return policies by shipping back unrelated items in authentic-looking packaging. Others believe the errors stem from employees juggling multiple orders and accidentally sticking the wrong label on a box.
“Guarantee someone was working on multiple orders and stuck the label on the wrong box,” one commenter on Ashlynn’s video suggested.
