Hurricane Dorian: Dog lover shelters 100 stray and abandoned animals as storm strikes

A dog lover is sheltering nearly 100 stray or abandoned pooches in her home in the Bahamas as Hurricane Dorian tears through the country.

Chella Phillips moved the dogs into her house as the Category 5 hurricane approached the Bahamas, where it has already killed five people.

She posted pictures of the animals in her home on Facebook and said 79 of them were staying in her master bedroom.

On Sunday, Ms Phillips, from Nassau, New Providence, in the Bahamas, wrote: "It has been insane since last night, poop and p*** non-stop but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in.

"We have barricaded the refuge and nobody is outside, the music is playing in all directions of the house and the AC is blowing for them.

"Each island (in the Bahamas) has an abundance of homeless dogs, my heart is so broken for the ones without a place to hide (from) a CAT 5 monster and only God can protect them now."

In an update posted yesterday, she added: "We are alright, after a stressful night we were flooded bad inside the refuge, not even three pumps could contain the rain from washing us inside.

"After an hour all three pumps reheated and burned down and we have been outside with buckets fighting a losing battle.

"All services are down, all TVs are fried from the lightning so no more cartoons for the sick dogs until we can purchase new ones.

"My brother slept an hour, I had been on my feet without any sleep drying the house and looking after my terrified dogs.

"I pray for the other islands who have unimaginable damages and I don't see how any dogs or any living being could have survived outside. My heart goes out to them."

Ms Phillips, who runs The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau refuge, thanked strangers for their messages of support.

Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas on Sunday and has so far destroyed or damaged as many as 13,000 houses.

Videos of the hurricane making landfall in the town of Freeport in northwest Bahamas show the raw strength of the 220 mile-an-hour storm.
