Hundreds of thousands apply to fly around the Moon with Japanese billionaire

More than 300,000 people have applied for free tickets onboard a private space flight around the Moon organised by a Japanese billionaire.

Online fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa invited civilians to apply for eight spare seats on the rocket, saying "I want people from all kinds of backgrounds to join".

The entrepreneur said he had received applications from 237 countries and areas as of this morning, with demand from the UK ranking at number five.

The trip – called the 'dearMoon Project' – is set to take place aboard SpaceX's Starship no earlier than 2023.

Mr Maezawa, 45, paid an undisclosed sum to secure all the seats on the flight in 2018.

His original plan was to handpick a number of "artists" to join him, but he has since expanded his search to a “more diverse audience”.

The selection criteria are: being ready to "push the envelope" creatively and being able to support other crew members "who share similar aspirations".

It is expected to take three days for the rocket to reach the Moon, loop around it, and then another three days to return to Earth.

SpaceX carried out tests on the latest prototype of the starship in Texas on Wednesday.

Despite a successful test-flight, the SN10 rocket exploded minutes after landing.

Applications close on Sunday 14 March.
