Hundreds of 'Free Palestine' protesters take to city centre streets

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets today (June 12) to protest in support of Palestinians following last month's fighting.

Manchester city centre was brought to a halt as protesters wound their way through the streets, stopping frequently in Market Street, calling on the government to take 'immediate action' to support Palestinians.

Demonstrators held signs showing slogans and images including 'loss of Palestinian land', 'freedom for Palestine', and '#GazaUnderAttack'.

Saturday's protests come after other large demonstrations in the city, including marches involving thousands descending on Piccadilly Gardens on May 22 and students demonstrating outside the University of Manchester on May 28.

Last month saw renewed violence in Israel and Gaza.

An Israel-Gaza ceasefire was declared on May 21.

The ceasefire came after an 11-day military offensive in the Gaza Strip considered the worst violence in the region since 2014, in which more than 250 people were killed, most of them in Gaza, the BBC reported.

Thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their homes after more than a week of sustained conflict.

The conflict followed weeks of spiralling Israeli-Palestinian tension in occupied East Jerusalem which culminated in clashes at a holy site revered by both Muslims and Jews.

Hamas began firing rockets after warning Israel to withdraw from the site, triggering retaliatory air strikes, it has also been reported.
