Human skeleton buried underneath former Debenhams store discovered by builders

A human skeleton has been discovered underneath an old department store.

The chilling building site was once home to a Debenhams department store but it is now being transformed into a university campus in Gloucester.

While work is underway, an eagle-eyed member of the public spotted the skeletal remains in the ground when she was standing on the upper floors of the building opposite the construction site.

As GloucesterLive reports, last summer archaeologists became aware the former Debenhams building had been built on a cemetery dating back to the middle ages.

The work on the site for the university is being carried out by construction firm Morgan Sindall who have assured the public that any remains found will be preserved.

A Morgan Sindall Construction spokesperson said: "As we are in the process of excavating a medieval cemetery we are working closely with local archaeologists to ensure any skeletal remains we find are preserved. We cannot confirm any more details at this stage.”
