Human remains found in Mossley are bones from an adult, police confirm

'All indications' show human remains found in Mossley are bones from an adult, police confirmed.

And initial examinations suggest they may be historic.

Police were called just before 10.05am on Saturday, October 17, to an area off Calf Lane in Mossley.

They were called to 'reports of possible human bones being found in landfill', GMP confirmed.

A scene was put in place following the discovery.

The site is near to Saddleworth Cricket Club and Saddleworth Moor, on the border between Mossley and Greenfield.

The bones were sent off to be forensically examined.

A spokeswoman for GMP confirmed that 'carbon dating of bones could take a few months'.

In their initial statement, police said: "Shortly before 10.05am on Saturday 17 October 2020, police were called to reports of possible human bones being found in landfill in an area off Calf Lane, Mossley.

"A scene remains in place and the bones are still being forensically analysed. Enquiries are continuing to ascertain the circumstances."

Providing more context to the discovery, police said: "All indications are the bones are from an adult.

"Carbon dating of bones could take a few months.

"Early indications are that these may be historic."
