Human excrement and piles of rubbish left behind by travellers

A large group of travellers have left their illegal camp in Weston-super-Mare - leaving a trail of mess behind them.

The group of around 25 caravans had been parked up at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre for 10 days.

But they left the site on May 19, ahead of North Somerset Council officers applying to the court on for a possession notice to evict them on May 20.

It is not known where the travellers have moved on to or whether they are still in the North Somerset area.

The group left piles of rubbish - including human excrement - on the site.

Black bin liners fill of rubbish, cardboard, bedding, unused food and cardboard boxes have been left strewn across the sports pitches.

Council contractors have now been on site clearing up the land.

The travellers arrived earlier this month and, despite requests by the council to move on, stayed put.

Initially a group of around 10 caravans parked up, but numbers quickly grew to 26 caravans and associated vehicles.

The travellers arrived in Weston earlier this month, originally parking up on playing field at Locking Primary School.

After being moved on they set up camp on Beach Lawns overnight before moving onto Hutton Moor.

North Somerset Council spends thousands of pounds each year on dealing with illegal traveller encampments.

As well as officer time and the cost of applying to the magistrates court for an order to evict the groups there are also the costs of cleaning up sites after illegal encampments.

Last summer the authority was forced to play 'cat and mouse' with traveller groups who, after being evicted from one site, simply moved to another close by.

Each time the authority has to carry out welfare checks, ask the group to leave and if they do not comply, apply to the courts to move them on.

Currently the council has no transient sites for travellers where they can be moved onto.

However the district does offer a number of permanent pitches for the travelling community including the Willowmead site and a newly developed site at the Old Junction Yard, both in Weston-super-Mare.

There are also privately operated traveller camps in the district.
