Hull's £355m Castle Street artery gains Budget sign-off - work could start this year

Hull’s £355 million upgrade of a vital city road is likely to start later this year.

The Budget brought financial sign off for the five-year Castle Street improvement project, with the go-ahead given in the following detail rather than the speech itself.

Currently awaiting the Development Consent Order - due in the next fortnight - it will be the most expensive road project ever seen in Hull, delivered by Highways England.

At the core is a complete transformation of the existing Mytongate junction - used by 47,000 vehicles a day.

The main east-west route through the city centre to the industrial east will be lowered under a new carriageway linking Ferensway and Commercial Road.

The A63 between Princes Dock and Myton Bridge will be widened to three lanes while an another pedestrian footbridge will be constructed at Porter Street.

All of the existing traffic lights on the A63 are to be removed between Myton Bridge and the Daltry Street flyover along with the ground-level pedestrian crossings.

The first phase of work will include the diversion of utilities, work in the Old Town and in Trinity Burial Ground near the Holiday Inn.

Inclusion of the Castle Street scheme ends years of lobbying by the city council and business leaders to resolve congestion at the Mytongate junction.

Dafydd Williams, head of communications and corporate affairs at ABP, said: “It is extremely welcome news that the funding for the next phase of the Castle Street road improvements has been given the go-ahead. This is the culmination of years of fantastic work by Hull City Council working in partnership with businesses such as ABP. When finished, it has the potential to reduce congestion, improve air quality and grow jobs in the port to the benefit of the whole Hull travel-to-work area.”
