Huge solar farm could be built near Newport and landmark building

Plans to build a solar farm on around 110-acres of land in Torfaen have been revealed.

The development is being proposed on land at Pentre Bach, next to Pentre Lane, in Llantarnam, Cwmbran.

It would have a generating capacity of 30 megawatts and the farm would be in place for 40 years.

The 45.80-hectare site is made up of agricultural land with woodland and hedgerows on field boundaries.

A Grade-II*-listed farmhouse – known as Pentre Bach – which dates to the late 16th century with historic associations with Llantarnam Abbey, is located next to the site.

But to reduce any visual impact on the setting of the farmhouse, fields closest to the boundary of the site have been removed from the development plans.

A planning statement says there will still be some change to the setting of the listed farmhouse, but that this would be temporary.

Limekiln Wood, a designated site of interest for nature conservation for its ancient woodland, is also located next to the site.

Planning documents say the development would have a “negligible impact” on the nearest residential areas, such as Bettws, Malpas, Llantarnam, Hollybush and Coed Eva, with the site not located near to densely populated areas.

As well as solar panels, the development will include gravel access roads, security fencing, CCTV cameras and a substation.

The application will be decided by Welsh Government as a development of national significance, but Torfaen council will firstly determine whether the project is likely to have significant effects on the environment.
