Denny's restaurant sign falls on car killing woman and injuring two in freak accident

A huge restaurant sign fell on a car killing a 72-year-old woman and injured two others in a freak accident.

The incident happened at fast-food restaurant chain Denny's, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, US, on Thursday afternoon after police were called to the car-park.

It is believed the sign fell during high winds and crushed the car, which had two other passengers in, along with the woman.

Cops were called to the scene at around 1.30pm after reports of an injured 72-year-old woman, who has not been identified, and two other victims who sustained serious injuries.

All three were taken to Baptist Health Hardin hospital for treatment before the woman being transferred to University of Louisville, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The two other victims are still in hospital, according to police, with their injuries undisclosed.

Officials believe the tragedy was caused by strong winds in the area and would have played a factor in the sign falling onto the car, according to cops.

Elizabethtown Police spokesman Chris Denham was left shocked after arriving at the scene.

He arrived at the car park and found the car which he believes was crushed due to the high winds.

The sign fell due to high winds, according to police (Facebook)

He said: “I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s certainly very windy out here and I’m certain that did have a factor and was involved in this.”

Eyewitness believe high winds blew the sign from its post which saw the sign crash on top of a car which had the 72-year-old woman in.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department and Hardin County EMS were able to rescue the victims at the scene and pulled out three victims who were quickly rushed to hospital following the devastating crush.

The other passengers, an adult man and a woman, were taken to Baptist Health Hardin for their injuries and are said to be in hospital still.

Tragically the 72-year-old woman later died from her injuries following the huge sign crushing on top of her car.

The woman has not been publicly identified as police look to speak to eyewitnesses and view the fast-food chain's car park CCTV to discover how the sign fell.

Elizabethtown Police Department and the City of Elizabethtown’s Planning Department are investigating the tragic death.
