Huge Christmas tree outside News Corps HQ set alight after man spotted climbing it

A massive Christmas tree was set alight in the heart of New York as firefighters battled the flames until the early hours.

The tree - outside the News Corporation building - was devastated by the flames in the apparent early morning attack.

Footage from the scene showed the the smoke coming from the branches. The fire also damaged three other nearby trees decorated with Christmas lights, locals reports claimed.

Police swooped after were called to Fox Square just after midnight.

A man has been arrested after allegedly setting the tree alight.

Officials have not revealed how exactly it was set on fire and would not say what was used to 'torch' the huge tree.

The 6th Avenue building houses Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post, with no damaged caused. Nobody was injured in the fire, it was confirmed.

Security guards reportedly saw a man climbing the massive tree moments before the fire.

Firefighters put out the blaze just after 1am, they stated, after they were called to midtown Manhattan.

Police confirmed one man was arrested after allegedly lighting the tree on fire.

But the force did not expand on why the fire was started after being called to the scene.

The NYPD said in a statement: "Upon arrival, officers observed the male running from the location and he was taken into custody.

"The fire within the tree was extinguished without further injury or incident by responding FDNY personnel.

"The male suspect was removed to the Midtown North Precinct where he will be processed."

Photos following the blaze showed the tree all-but wrecked, with one small part seemingly untouched by the flames with red, white and blue ornaments still in view.

Police closed off the surrounding streets as firefighters extinguished the blaze in the early hours.

The NYPD said this morning that their investigation into the fire remains ongoing.
