Huge budget black hole at Merseyside school where headteacher, director and governor left suddenly

A Merseyside school where a headteacher, top director and chair of governors suddenly left their roles is being investigated.

The ECHO understands an investigation has now been launched over a budget black hole of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Yesterday we reported that Tom Quinn, the executive head at St John Plessington Catholic College in Bebington, Wirral had left his post last Thursday - with operations director Sally Mitchell following him out of the door on the same day.

On a mass day of departures, the school's chair of governors John Williams also left his position.

Mr Quinn has also left his role as chief executive of the Holy Family Catholic Multi-Academy Trust that runs the school - and an internal investigation is now being carried out by the Trust.

The ECHO understands that the investigation is focusing on a black hole of hundreds of thousands of pounds in the Trust's budget.

The Trust would not comment on this specific allegation.

Instead a spokesman said: “Each of these three people have given many years of service to the school and the Diocese would like to take this opportunity to wish them will for the future.

“Pupils, parents and staff can be assured that the stability and success of St John Plessington Catholic College is uppermost in the minds of Trustee Directors, Governors and the Diocese and all involved with the oversight of the school and the arrangements which are being put into place will ensure this.

“Simon Rylance, deputy head teacher at St John Plessington, has kindly agreed to become acting head teacher to ensure continuity for the school until a new appointment is made, and Emily McArdle, the vice chair of the trust, will lead the governors."

The Holy Family Trust consists of five local schools - which also includes St Mary's Catholic College in Wallasey.

St Mary's made headlines last year when it took the controversial decision to remove a wall from its girls toilets - sparking fury from parents.

After the latest revelations about the Trust, local MP Alison McGovern has demanded an urgent meeting.

She said: ""Parents will rightly be worried about these events, and are entitled to know what is going on.

"I have requested an urgent meeting with the Trust that runs SJP so that they can explain more to me about what has happened.

"Many of my constituents study, work or are parents at SJP and the importance of this issue to our South Wirral community cannot be underestimated."
