How Zante plans to protect one of Greece’s most iconic tourist sites

  • Greek authorities have announced plans to extend Navagio beach in Zante to protect the eroding MV Panagiotis shipwreck.
  • Prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed initiatives to protect, restore and manage the Zante shipwreck at Navagio beach during his weekly review on Sunday.
  • The plan includes a 30-metre extension of the shore towards the sea, using 45,000 cubic metres of gravel to distance the ship's deteriorating hull from wave action, according to Greek news outlet Ekathimerini .
  • The MV Panagiotis ran aground in October 1980 and is a popular tourist destination, though the site is currently closed until at least 31 October due to landslide safety concerns.
  • The Municipality of Zakynthos, in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens, will now proceed with a plan to protect the beach's natural environment.
