World Cup 2026: Need to Know

World Cup 2026 Preview

With the start of World Cup 2026, the tournament’s familiar spell is already visible everywhere: in its ability to drag Neymar back from the edge of a seemingly fading international career; in the almost cruel delight it takes in convincing England, the Netherlands, Belgium and others that this might finally be their Sisyphean breakthrough; in the tight grip it still holds over Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

Even those who have already climbed to the top are not immune. Lionel Messi was expected to bow out after Argentina finally crossed the line four years ago, though not without controversy over several key refereeing decisions. Instead, he chose to extend his international story, combining one last campaign with an ambassadorial role in the United States.

Kylian Mbappé, meanwhile, was just 19 when he carried France to glory eight years ago. In Qatar, he topped the scoring charts and famously struck a hat-trick in the final. Now, despite only two World Cup appearances, he stands on the brink of potentially becoming the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with five more goals this summer. Yet he also finds himself in the strange position of needing success partly to quiet criticism from Real Madrid’s vast supporter base.

Adding to the intrigue are Lamine Yamal and Erling Haaland, two of club football’s most devastating talents, both poised to make a defining impact on the global stage. Even with a recent hamstring setback, the sheer presence of the 18-year-old Yamal in Spain’s squad reinforces their status among the favourites heading into the tournament.
