The relentless "rewardist" had previously believed his estranged older brother Russell (Jensen Ackles) to be responsible so when he turns up in season 3 there is an extra element of tension to add to the dysfunctional family dynamic - it's no wonder Shaw seems to have spent most of his adult life on his own and/or living in forests.
