The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Easter Sermon is one of the most significant moments of the Easter weekend.
Justin Welby traditionally delivers his festive message in Canterbury Cathedral during the Easter Sunday Eucharist, in front of a 1,500-strong congregation.
This year things will be very different, with all cathedrals and churches closed to private and public worship as part of social distancing measures designed to contain the coronavirus.
This year the Archbishop will deliver his Easter Sunday sermon from the kitchen of his London flat.
The clergyman has recorded his message on his iPad, and it will feature in the Church of England’s first national digital service.
The service will be available to watch on the Church of England’s Facebook page and website from 9am on Easter Sunday (April 12).
In his sermon the Most Rev Justin Welby will talk about the courage of those on the front lines of the Covid-19 battle.
“After so much suffering, so much heroism from key workers and the NHS,” he will say, “we cannot be content to go back to what was before as if all is normal. There needs to be a resurrection of our common life.
“In the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have a hope that is surer than stone; than any architecture,” he will say. “Even in the dark days of this Easter we can feed on hope. We can dream of what our country and our world will look like after the pandemic.”
