However, Virgil van Dijk was on hand to power home a late winner and steal the three points for Liverpool.
Diego Simeone was sent off that day, for his fury in the aftermath of the winning goal, and he claimed afterwards that he had been insulted for 90 minutes by the Liverpool supporters.
Arteta issued his sympathy for the Argentine in his pre-match press conference, but he will be hoping that the home faithful will give the La Liga outfit and their manager a similarly hostile reception when they visit today.
