How to make a wall display with wreaths – 7 expert tips

Wreath display .

Creating a festive wall display with wreaths is an impactful way to adorn any space with seasonal colors and textures. This DIY project can serve as a versatile centerpiece for seasonal celebrations, whether you are creating your own wreaths or using beautiful pre-made Christmas wreaths in a creative arrangement.

You can transform any space into a seasonal showstopper by strategically selecting types of wreaths, experimenting with arrangements, and employing innovative hanging techniques in the ideal location, creating a wall display that seamlessly blends your personal style with festive aesthetics.

Our experts explain the 7 steps to personalize your wall display with wreaths.

How to make a wall display with wreaths

‘Wreaths are a classic Christmas decoration and a particularly great option if you’re looking to create a more traditional look,' says Millie Hurst, section editor at Homes & Gardens. 'They can also create a nice balance if you have other more contemporary or colorful decorations going on.'

1. Choose your wreaths

'Start by selecting wreaths of different sizes, shapes, and textures,' recommends Ilia Mundut, founder and CEO of HeftyBerry, a wreath store. 'This will add visual interest and dimension to your wall display.'

'You can use store-bought wreaths or make your own using materials like raffia, embroidery hoops, or seasonal foliage.'

You can opt for wreaths that are synonymous with the season or opt for wreaths that complement your room's color scheme and style. For instance, with a rustic-themed interior, wreaths with preserved leaves and twigs can be excellent, whereas, for a more modern, minimalistic look, you might want to opt for metal wreaths with subtle decorations.

Choosing different types of wreaths can add depth to your display, with different sizes, styles, and shapes, including circular, square, or oval wreaths.

2. Consider size layering

'To add further dimension to your wall display, you can incorporate wreaths of varying sizes,' says Ilia Mundut 'Start with the largest wreath as the base layer, then add medium-sized wreaths, and finally, smaller wreaths on top. This size layering technique creates a cascading effect and adds visual interest.'

3. Decide on the arrangement

'Plan your wall display layout before hanging,' advises Bart Nanka from online plant store Mudbrick Herb Cottage, 'Start with the focal point wreath and build around it. Experiment with shapes and spacing for an organic, cohesive look.'

'You can experiment with different layouts before finalizing the arrangement,' adds Ilia Mundut.

To plan the arrangement, you can lay out your wreaths on a flat surface to determine the best arrangement on the wall, or, try my personal favorite hack of temporarily sticking up pieces of paper cut in the shape and size of your wreaths in the desired spots. This will help you visualize how the display will look, and determine the ideal spacing and arrangement.

You can create a symmetrical or asymmetrical arrangement, depending on your preference. For example, you could start with a large wreath in the center and surround it with smaller ones. Alternatively, you could hang them in a line for a more linear, organized set-up. You can also create a Christmassy motif by arranging them into a star of a Christmas tree.

‘More is more when it comes to festive decor, so don’t be afraid to hang multiple wreaths,' adds Millie Hurst.

4. Hanging locations

Next, decide where you want to hang your wreaths. 'Think about where they’ll have the biggest impact,' says Millie Hurst. 'This could be on a dining room wall to create a beautiful backdrop to Christmas dinner, or as a way to add texture and intrigue on a far wall visible in the entryway as guests enter.’

Light also plays a crucial role in how the wreaths look on the wall. Positioning them near a source of light would not just enhance their visibility but also add depth to the display. You can also consider how various elements on the wreath may reflect light, creating an illuminating display, such as the flickering of the fire below onto the metal elements of the wreath.

Ask yourself, where will the wreaths look best considering visual impact, light, as well as available space, and traffic flow.

5. Hanging techniques

'Beyond the traditional door hook, experiment with unconventional hanging methods,' suggests Bart Nanka. 'Utilize adhesive hooks for a damage-free display or intertwine wreaths with ribbons for a whimsical touch.' We recommend this Command variety pack hooks, from Amazon.

Measure the space to ensure proper placement and mark the spots where you'll install the hooks or hangers.

You can use Command hooks or nails to hang your wreaths, or think outside the box by using ribbon to suspend them or invisible thread, from Amazon to create the illusion that they are floating. You may have to double up the thread a few times to ensure it is strong enough to hold the wreath.

6. Tips for hanging your wreaths

Jack Devid, interior expert at Pcbinsider explains how to hang the wreaths for your wall display:

1. 'Prepare your wreaths: If your wreaths do not have built-in hangers, you'll need to attach hanging ribbons or wires. Use floral wire or strong ribbon to create loops on the back of each wreath. Ensure they are securely fastened.

2. 'Install hooks or hangers: Based on your measurements, install the hooks or hangers on the wall. Follow the instructions provided with the specific hardware. Make sure they are level and can support the weight of your wreaths.

3. 'Hang the wreaths: Carefully hang each wreath on the designated hooks or hangers. Start with the center wreath if you have an odd number of wreaths or the middle wreath of an even number. This will help you maintain a balanced look.

4. 'Adjust and secure: After hanging the wreaths, step back and assess the arrangement. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the spacing and positioning are just right. Secure any loose ribbons or wires.'

7. Finishing touches

'Finally, step back once more to ensure everything looks as you envisioned. Make any final tweaks to achieve the desired aesthetic,' advises Ilia Mundut.

'Remember to assess your wall display as you go along to ensure the wreaths are evenly spaced and visually balanced. Play around with different arrangements until you achieve the desired look.

'Creating a wall display with wreaths allows you to showcase your creativity and add a festive touch to your space. Have fun experimenting with different wreath styles, sizes, and arrangements to create a unique and visually stunning display.

'If desired, you can enhance your wall display by incorporating other decorative elements. For example, you can add greenery, ribbons, or seasonal accents like pinecones or ornaments. These additional elements can be attached to the wreaths or hung separately to create a cohesive look.'

FAQs

What is the best way to maintain wreaths to keep them looking good for longer?

In terms of maintenance, remember that the wreaths need to be handled gently due to their delicate nature. Keep live wreaths away from direct heat sources to preserve their freshness.

Depending on the materials used, you might also need to dust them periodically to ensure they maintain their charm and freshness.

Bart Nanka leaves us with one last tip: 'Keep things fresh by rotating wreaths with the changing seasons. Spring florals, summer greens, autumn leaves, and winter berries offer a vibrant, ever-evolving display.'
