How to get financial help to heat your home as temperatures drop

Temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing this week, adding further worry to those already struggling to afford to heat their homes. A weather warning for ice and snow was issued by the Met Office on Tuesday with some places seeing temperatures drop to -5°C at night time.

Health officials are advising people to heat main rooms until at least December 12 if they cannot afford to heat their whole home, adding it is important to heat bedrooms before bedtime and the living area during the day if it is being used. The UK Health Security Agency made the alert which is triggered when severe cold weather is likely to affect people's health.

Those already struggling to pay bills may be concerned about the increase in energy usage over the next few days, so we have all the places you could seek financial help to heat your home.

Cold weather payment

People who claim certain benefits automatically receive a £25 cold weather payment if the temperature in their area is recorded as or forecast to be zero degrees Celsius or below over seven consecutive days. This cold weather payment scheme runs from November 1 to March 31.

Although it's set to be very cold, whether you will get a payment for this week depends on the specific temperatures and remember, the mercury has to drop to 0°C or below for seven consecutive days to trigger the payment. So even if it's below freezing for six days, if the temperature rises on the seventh day, the clock will reset to zero and the counting will start again.

If you are on the following benefits, you will qualify for the payment:

  • Pension credit
  • Income Support
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest
