Let’s be honest. Most of us have group chats filled to the brim with screenshots of Instagram photos which are just too good not to share with pals. But when we take that sneaky screenshot, does the person who sent the photo know we’re saving it? And more importantly, is there a way to know whether someone else is screenshotting our own photos and videos?
Well, when it comes to Instagram, the answer is yes - at least when it comes to photos and videos sent via DMs. Yep, awkward. They knew you were screenshotting the whole time.
As most people already know, there’s a number of ways you can send photos on Instagram, with the app giving senders the choice as to whether they want the photo to remain in the chat permanently, or whether they want it to only be viewed once - with the added option of one single replay.

So, if you receive a photo or video which you can only view once - much like Snapchat - it’s no surprise you might want to save it to your camera roll by screenshotting it, but if you thought you could do so without the other person finding out, you were mistaken.
That’s because when you send a photo that can only be viewed once, a little note appears to say when the recipient opened it.
And, if they go on to screenshot the picture - low and behold - the sender gets a little note telling them the photo has been screenshotted.
So, now you have to question whether it’s really worth the awkwardness of the person knowing you’ve saved their photo just so you can share it in the group chat. A true dilemma of the ages.
There is one positive, though! If you’re often guilty of screenshotting people’s Instagram posts or stories, you’re in luck, because there’s currently no way of the other person knowing - thank goodness.
If you could keep it that way, Instagram, we’d really appreciate it.
